My box arrived a couple of days ago, and so I cannot comment yet on anything long-term, but these knives are a complete joy. Firstly they are both beautiful and visually interesting. The Damask (a pattern weld in this case IIRC) draws the eye, and the slight variances in the handles remind you that you are dealing with real wood. I can find no flaws with the construction, though to my taste a good storage box (that held say 8 in this space) would be better than a display box, and for some reason the emblem on the handle is "down" when in the display case. They have made quite the conversation piece at Christmas-eve dinner.
BTW: Although these knives are listed in the "classic" set, and there may be a construction difference, they have the emblem and brass-rings of the "elite" set.
As to cutting: well, I'm looking for more things to cut. They have been an absolute joy on meats! If they last a while before needing sharpening, I'm getting four or eight more and these will be passed down someday to my children.

The Shun knives are handcrafted in Seki City, Japan's historic samurai-making center, and come secured in a red-plush-lined bamboo box for superb presentation and safe storage.
These Shun knives stand out for their incredibly sharp VG-10 blades, clad on each side with 16 layers of high-carbon, stainless steel. The Damascus-look ripples not only add sheen but release food quickly for perfectionist slicing. Shun edges are formed to an unusually keen 16 degree angle, which is one reason they're so prized among chefs who value uniformly thin slices, a necessity in Japanese cuisine.
